Established in July 2014, Kijitora Publishing is an independent publisher specializing in
children’s books.
Our founder, Akiko Kojima, holds an M.A. from Hiroshima University in the study of the relationships between society and children’s literature. Akiko has always been fascinated by children’s books. In 2009 she started a reading group in her local area to study English children’s books and it has been popular ever since.
Akiko is also a passionate and talented English to Japanese translator. In February 2014, she
won First Prize in Japan’s most famous translation competition for picture books. The
competition is sponsored by Itabashi City in Tokyo which has a long-time friendship with
Bologna, Italy, the host city for the famous annual Children’s Book Fair.
Akiko’s great success in this prestigious competition, which promotes the importance of mutual
understanding of different cultures, has further inspired her to make her dream come true:
enriching children’s lives with fine books; hence the launch of her own publishing company.
Akiko’s commitment and enthusiasm has been rewarded with an extra-governmental grant.
At Kijitora Publishing, we strongly believe that every child should be given the opportunity to
enrich his/her imagination and develop understanding of other people and cultures through
reading.
Our mission is to discover great children’s books around the world and share them with young
readers and the young at heart.
